Ken was a World War II Fighter pilot. Like many others he was trained in Canada under The British Commonwealth Air Training Plan. On completion of which he flew back one of new aircraft being built over there for the War effort. Having survived the war Ken flew for BOAC and BA eventually taking on a senior Marketing position within the Company. Apparently Twickenham contacted him asking if BA would be interested in advertising on the roof. Ken had great pleasure in responding thus ' One of our planes passes over your stadium every 2 minutes I do not feel it necessary to spend another £12000'.
Brian Fuller, one of our Founder Members, knew Ken well, thanks to his love of Fly Fishing, Golf, Cricket and the odd pint. When we were looking for someone to fill the Secretarial position Brian asked Ken if he would fill the role. Although at the time Ken did not follow Rugby he was only too willing to help the Club, which he saw as a great asset to the Town. Those that had the pleasure of reading the minutes of the Club committee meetings during his tenure will remember they always raised a wry smile or a raucous chuckle.
Ken was very involved with the initial Hampshire & Isle of Wight Air Ambulance and raised money in various ways. At Ken's request the Club has supported it ever since. We have made use of the facility quite a few times. Another thing to thank Ken for.
Ken became a Glider Pilot and then an instructor. He showed me his log book covering a two day episode where the thermals, in the Scottish Highlands, were such that he stayed up for over 8 hours on both days. Landing in the dark with members of the Gliding Club turning their car lights on to show him the way home.
He enjoyed flying his model aircraft for many years until the transporting became difficult quite recently. So many stories. The man was a legend!!
Ken is survived by his dear wife Dodo and family. Our thoughts are with them.
His funeral will take place on Friday 7th October at St Mary's Church Fordingbridge at 14:00hrs. The Club will provide a guard of honour.
